Lotus Domino Server Software, Version 7 - Product Description
IBM(R) Lotus(R) Domino(R) is the server software that complements the Lotus Notes(R) client. Lotus Domino provides the underlying service engines for mail, calendar and scheduling, directory, database, application serving, administration, security, connectivity, web serving and more all in one system. Lotus Domino server provides enterprise-grade collaboration capabilities that can be deployed as a core e-mail and enterprise scheduling infrastructure, or as a custom application platform, or both.
Lotus Domino server and
Lotus Notes client software
can help you improve the productivity of your people and enable users to share, manage and organize information more efficiently.
Security
Lotus Domino server incorporates built-in, advanced and proven security features including spam filters, client software-based virus protection features, server/local file encryption and digital signatures. Lotus Domino also supports optional third-party security and compliance tools. These safeguards, all or in part, identify, track and/or prevent security breaches — and are designed to protect the privacy and integrity of your company’s information and assets.
The layered security model of Lotus Domino, in which security spans from server to document, is an industry best practice. Comprehensive security tools include:
- Certification and ID files
- Server Access Lists
- Access Control Lists and Roles
- View and Form, Section and Field
- Encryption – Public and Private keys, encryption keys for applications
- Database encryption (local)
- Database signing
- Multiple administrator roles
- Programmability restrictions
- Execution Control Lists (with Lotus Notes client)
- Online content filters (with Lotus Domino Web Access)
Much more than e-mail
Even the "messaging only" license types for Lotus Domino server, Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino Web Access client software include entitlement to team collaboration functionality using out-of-the-box application templates. These include discussion forums, team rooms, and reference databases with basic workflow (document library template).
Administrative control / serviceability / manageability
Lotus Domino server domain monitoring tools (security, database, directory and e-mail probes) developed for high availability, help you identify and address any potential bottlenecks, errors and conflicts before they impact system performance. Lotus Domino "set policies" provide you with the option to lock down and roll out sets of e-mail and calendar preferences. This provides you with more administrative control and can be applied to those users who do not need to take advantage of a customized Lotus Notes or Lotus Domino Web Access user experience.
Cross-platform support
Support for a broad range of server operating systems (Microsoft(R) Windows(R), LinuxTM, IBM AIX(R), IBM i5/OSTM, IBM z/OS(R) and Sun Solaris) can help you maintain and extend your messaging and collaboration infrastructure with the flexibility that today's real-world, mixed environments demand.
Backend integration
The option to use IBM DB2 Universal Database as an alternative to Lotus Notes Storage Facility (NSF) data store provides the flexibility for IT administrators to capture, store and repurpose Lotus Domino server data in a relational database. Developers can create new, powerful applications using existing skills in Lotus Domino application development and/or SQL.
Native support for Web services and a new design element in Lotus Domino Designer enables integration with JavaTM 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Microsoft .NET environments using existing skills. Developers can extend the rapid application development model and easily turn collaboration applications into Web services used by portals and other standards-based applications in which you have already invested.
Clear and solid roadmap
A clear and solid roadmap indicates that Lotus Domino-based collaborative applications can be easily adapted for future user interface experiences and innovative interaction models including the next release of Lotus Notes.
High availability / reliability
24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week (24 x 7) user access, continuity, and availability are feasible through the use of advanced capabilities including server clustering, transaction logging, fault recovery and more. This helps maximize system up-time.
Scalability and performance
Performance benchmarks indicate that Lotus Domino 7 server has the potential to support up to 80 percent more Lotus Notes mail users (up to 50 percent more Lotus Domino Web Access users) with up to 25 percent fewer CPU resources than Lotus Notes and Domino 6.5.
