Lotus Domino Software Choices Available
IBM(R) Lotus(R) Domino(R) is the server software that complements the Lotus Notes(R) client. Lotus Domino provides the underlying service engines for mail, calendar and scheduling, directory, database, application serving, administration, security, connectivity, web serving and more all in one system. Lotus Domino software provides enterprise-grade collaboration capabilities that can be deployed as a core e-mail and enterprise scheduling infrastructure, as a custom application platform, or both.

Lotus Domino software is available in three basic choices - Messaging, Enterprise, or Utility. These server products are described below.
Lotus Domino Messaging Server -
This core, enterprise email server provides business-grade e-mail messaging, group scheduling, and collaboration capabilities to its user base, and includes the following features:
- Mail, calendar and scheduling, tasks management, personal information management (directory) functions
- Collaboration capabilities including discussion databases, team rooms, and reference databases (document library) with basic workflow
- Domino partitioning (the capability to run more than one instance of Lotus Domino on the same machine using one copy of the Domino code)

Lotus Domino Enterprise Server -
Provides all the above core enterprise messaging, scheduling, and collaboration capabilities, plus custom Domino-based applications. Designed to increase return on investment by including the business benefit of Lotus Domino applications, and is designed for environments requiring high availability. Includes the following features:
- E-mail, calendar and scheduling, personal information management (PIM) directory functions, discussion databases, teamrooms, and reference databases (document library) with basic workflow
- Access to collaborative applications developed in-house (using IBM Lotus Domino Designer software, a separate product) or from the large portfolio of industry-specific and cross-industry applications in the marketplace
- Lotus Domino partitioning (the capability to run more than one instance of Lotus Domino on the same machine using one copy of the Lotus Domino code)
- Lotus Domino clustering for failover1 and load balancing2

Lotus Domino Utility Server -
Provides access to collaborative applications for an unlimited number of web browser users and separately-licensed Lotus Notes users. Designed for collaborative applications where the number of users is high or difficult to track (for example, a web application for customer self-service). Includes the following features:
- Access to non-mail collaborative applications (Use of individual mail files not allowed); CALs (client access licenses) not required for web browser access to non-mail applications, even when user authentication is involved. Access from a Lotus Notes client is allowed, but the Lotus Notes code and CAL must be acquired separately
- Lotus Domino partitioning (the capability to run more than one instance of Lotus Domino on the same machine using one copy of the Lotus Domino code)
- Lotus Domino clustering for failover1 and load balancing2
- Limited use entitlement to WebSphere(R) Application Server
- Entitlement to IBM Lotus Domino Document Manager and IBM Lotus Workflow (new as of 29 March 2005)

Lotus Domino Messaging Express Server

Lotus Domino Collaboration Express Server
Designed for companies or organizations with up to 1,000 employees, seeking core enterprise messaging, scheduling and collaboration capabilities, plus the business benefits of custom Domino-based applications.

** with purchase of Lotus Domino Collaboration Express (Lotus Notes) clients for your end users.
Lotus Domino Utility Server Express
Provides unlimited access to web users to in-house Lotus Domino applications or third-party custom applications available in the marketplace through hundreds of Domino Developers, IBM Business Partners, and independent software vendors. Access to the server is also available to Lotus Notes client users who are separately licensed. Designed for small or medium organizations with up to 1,000 employees and limited to a maximum of four CPUs per company.
Note: Lotus Domino Utility Server Express removes selected capabilities of the full Lotus Domino Utility Server that are designed for larger enterprises. The license restrictions are:
- No use on IBM eServer zSeries(R) platform (Linux or z/OS(R))
- No accompanying IBM WebSphere Application Server license
- No accompanying entitlement to Lotus Domino Document Manager or Lotus Workflow
Price (per processor): $2,757
1 "Failover" is a technical capability that provides redundancy for end users. For example, if a user's primary server goes down for any reason, then those users technically will auto-connect (or spill over) seamlessly to a secondary server that provides them access to their data.
2 "Load Balancing" is a technical capability that provides ongoing high performance even with increased workload (coming from higher numbers of concurrent users for example). The way this is accomplished is by having 2 or more servers in a cluster group whereby the full load is offset & balanced by the other server(s) in the group.)
